Welsh Colleges Regional Competitions kick off for 2016/17

The first round of the Welsh Colleges Sport Regional Competitions took place on Friday 7th October. The events included men’s rugby 7s and men’s and ladies golf. As in previous years, the events were hosted at top quality venues with Coleg Sir Gâr hosting the rugby at their Graig Campus and the Royal St David’s Golf Club, Harlech provided an international level venue for the golf.

In the rugby, Pembrokeshire College, Merthyr College, Gower College Swansea and NPTC Group contested closely fought semi – finals. NPTC Group ran out winners in the final 41-0 against Gower College Swansea and will now represent Welsh Colleges at the National Championships in Nottingham in April 2017. Merthyr fought back from an earlier defeat in the last seconds of their semi - final against Gower to win the Plate competition, beating Coleg Gwent Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone in the process.

The Golf competition was very close run, with Hari Pachu from Gower College Swansea scoring 72 to secure first place. Three of his fellow competitors also qualified for the national championships. They are; Dalton Brown, NPTC Group; Thomas Froom, Coleg Meirion Dwyfor and Harry Bartley, Coleg Cambria. In the ladies competition, Elin Jones from Coleg Meirion Dwyfor won and is now attending her second national championships as a result.

Rob Baynham, Sports Co-ordinator at ColegauCymru / CollegesWales, said “Thanks to everyone involved for making these competitions such a success. Coming up is a competition which will see over 800 FE students from across Wales visiting Cardiff on Tuesday 15th November participating in basketball and netball, with winners from this event aiming to qualify for Nottingham in 2017.”
