On 4th July 2018, the Creative Solutions ILS conference, was held at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells. The main focus of the day was the use of non-accredited learning in Independent Living Skills programmes and there was also a useful presentation on the implications for FEIs of the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal Act. The room was filled with highly committed teachers and managers from colleges all across Wales who work with learners with Additional Learning Needs.
Chris Denham, ALN Transformation Lead (FE) and Anne Evans, ColegauCymru Consultant and Creative Solutions Project Lead were presenting on behalf of ColegauCymru and were able to share their breadth of knowledge on the subject, answering any questions given by the room. Richard Tither of Estyn emphasized that the changes to ILS curriculum must be transformative in order to meet the needs of learners and to comply with ALNET.
Contributions from Grwp Llandrillo Menai, Coleg Elidyr and Coleg Cambria all succeeded in inspiring the audience by demonstrating how they help their ALN learners achieve their goals and make progress, whilst maintaining rigour and quality in the programmes offered. Their innovative ideas sparked the imagination of what was possible when focusing on a person-centred approach using non-accredited learning.
Attendees both enjoyed the conference and found it worthwhile commenting that
The intended messages were eloquently voiced by all who presented and that they are
now clear on the timeline of events in order to get plans implemented in ILS provision. Others felt that the most effective part of the conference was
sharing ideas and that overall, the day
was really inspirational — thank you
Colegau Cymru now look forward to the next Creative Solutions ILS conference, which will take place in October to continue the valuable discussions surrounding developments in the ILS curriculum, ALN transformation work and feedback from the College Creative Solutions ILS projects.
