Further education colleges stepping up to the future

27 March 2017

As practitioners gather for ColegauCymru’s annual Teaching and Learning conference today in Cardiff, the focus is firmly on the digital agenda and More Able and Talented (MAT). The purpose of the event is to ensure that teaching and learning skills are reflective of up-to-date occupational standards, expertise and practice.

MAT learners are those who are excelling in their chosen programme of study whether vocational, academic, artistic or creative. Excelling does not necessarily mean ‘high flying academically’ – it can be those who demonstrate a particular ability which could be further developed.

Further education is committed to providing their 150,000+ post-16 learners with high quality education, training and skills that are relevant to jobs and employer needs.

The conference sponsored by Welsh Government, will be officially addressed by the Minister for Lifelong Learning and Welsh Language, Alun Davies who is committed to supporting quality, flexible and accessible education, training and skills in communities across Wales.

Sharron Lusher, the Chair of ColegauCymru which is the charity and limited company representing FE said, ‘FE providers are independent organisations responsible for their own workforce. A high calibre, effective FE workforce is crucial for the successful delivery of a range of Welsh Government policies and for the success of the economy. The post-16 education, training and skills landscape is changing. We will embrace these changes and work together to ensure quality lifelong learning opportunities for learners in Wales’.
