Collaboration key to post-16 education reform success

At its most recent policy conference, ColegauCymru / CollegesWales has called for a re-enforced partnership approach to the provision of Post-Compulsory Education and Training in Wales.
Delegates from colleges, schools, universities, government, training providers, employers and learners took part in round table sessions to discuss the best way forward, in the appropriately named conference ‘A Collaborative Provider Approach to Provision’. The event sponsored by enablers of bilingual websites and web applications Linguaskin addressed the thorny issue of collaboration and competition in a spirit of shared endeavour with common aims and objectives.
Iestyn Davies, Chief Executive of ColegauCymru, Wales’ national post-16 educational charity, said: “In a world where skills and educational needs are changing rapidly, Wales must respond quickly and effectively to current and future needs. So often policy is made with regard to the needs of providers and not the needs of learners. The proposed reform to the planning mechanisms for post compulsory education and training is an opportunity to build a new model that puts learner-centred provision central to our systems. This conference is an opportunity to discuss what this means for all of us involved in delivering education and learning.”
Speaking at the conference Eluned Morgan AM, the newly appointed Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning added, “The Hazelkorn reforms open up new challenges and possibilities for all providers of post-16 education. It is critical that the interests and needs of the learner remain at the heart of all discussions. We must create a new system powered by innovation through collaboration, enabling progression and building strong links with business, so that skills gaps can be addressed.”
At the conference, the charity called for an approach that is focused on raising standards and opportunities for life-long learning to ensure individual and national prosperity.
